Mean Adults- Part Four- Final

September 9, 2010

porcupine Pictures, Images and PhotosThis is IT. . .the last in our series about dealing with adults who are mean to our Sizzlers.

Thus far we’ve covered this topic from several angles.

We’ve looked at how to…
Change the Situation
Change the Sizzler
Change the Offending Adult

What could be left?

How about. . . (more…)

Suspect Words from Your Doctor

April 7, 2010

women doctor clipboard Pictures, Images and PhotosMy youngest Sizzler is sick. We’ve been running back and forth to medical offices quite a bit of late, and we’ll be going to the hospital for a fairly serious test tomorrow.  It’s not a concern in the life-and-death category, but neither is it a mere cold.  It’s a semi-major concern that will probably be with us for many months to come.

Why am I telling you this?  Because in the midst of all this medically related busyness I had a profound moment of Deja vu.
And THAT is the thing about which I am writing to you today.

As my little fireball was overcome with high fevers, pounding headaches and other debilitating symptoms, she slowed a bit from her usual level of high energy. To the loving and familiar parental eye, she was clearly a shadow of her former boisterous self.  But to the stranger’s eye, that of a doctor, she didn’t display near the level of lethargy that a typical child might show under similar conditions.

And that’s when I heard it.
The words that were a shock wave from 13 years ago.
The doctor said with a shrug… (more…)

It’s the Mother’s Fault

My oh my.

I shall never complain again.

You know how people sometimes say something about our wiggly or distractible kids and they are waaaaaaay off base, so much so that it’s almost humorous?

Such things no longer bring defensiveness from me.

Usually I just nod, and give them a knowing smile.

Like the day one of my son’s teacher’s said to me, “Oh I don’t believe he’s ADHD. He couldn’t be. Why…he has said things in my class that are truly insightful and intelligent.”

<knowing smile>

Or how about, “Is it really ADHD? Or is it Sin?”

<knowing smile> plus maybe a few gracious words intended to educate.

But let’s talk about THE BIG GUILT—those comments that are intended to suggest that our child is the way he or she is because of something we’ve done…some bad parenting choice we’ve made. (more…)

Hear the Sizzle

Chels leaping Pictures, Images and PhotosThere really is a dance that goes on around our Sizzlers.

Learning to playfully change the subject when it’s clear our Sizzlers are about to meltdown…is a dance.
Learning to artificially lower our voice to a really calm and quiet level to avoid further raising their excitability…is a dance.
Learning to hold them tightly when their sobs are so deep they fill them with spasms…is a dance.
And saying for the 89th just how wonderful their piano piece is even though you said it on time 88 and 87 and 86 such that you’re soooo ready to throw The Happy Birch Canoe and his Wigwam too…RIGHT out the window….is a dance.

I just LOVE these kids and all their energy.
I’m tired, but I love ’em. (more…)

Do I Make People Tired?

February 6, 2010

sleeping cats Pictures, Images and PhotosThere’s a conversation you should have with your Sizzler.
Not so much, if they’re the dreamy, mind-just-sort-of-wanders type of child.
But rather, with the child who talks a mile a minute about each and every thing that pops into their heads (which is constantly full of such pops) and is absolutely compelled to share it all with you (or whomever is within three feet of them) in a non-stop, rambling, even tenacious fashion, complete with sound effects, hand motions and above all…en-THU-siasm.

That is the child to whom the following thoughts are dedicated. (more…)
